How can I do Spoken Spanish lessons online?

Speaking Spanish is the easy part. Understanding what comes back is what defeats people — and that is exactly what the Spoken Spanish lessons train.

Speaking is easy; understanding what comes back is the hard part. JSS pre-recorded lessons focus on “building the ear” using natural-speed Spanish across real scenarios like shops or doctors. Unlike crowded classrooms, our format ensures constant, focused listening. You’ll learn to decode native speech, not just follow a script.

In more detail

A question that many prospective students raise about the JSS Spoken Spanish section is a practical one: how can spoken language skills possibly be developed through a pre-recorded online course? The answer requires understanding something that most people get wrong about learning to speak Spanish — the assumption that speaking is the difficult part.

James Bretherton of James Spanish School is direct on this point. Speaking Spanish is not the hard part. It is the easy part. Given the right structural foundation, virtually any adult learner can be taught to produce grammatically correct, natural-sounding Spanish sentences in a relatively short period of time. Anyone who completes the 50 JSS core lessons can say virtually anything they need to in Spanish. They can walk into a shop, a restaurant, or a doctor’s surgery, and produce the sentences required for their purpose.

The hard part — the part that defeats almost every learner — is understanding what comes back.

This is a problem that James has observed consistently across decades of classroom teaching. Students arrive at the spoken stage of their learning having mentally rehearsed the conversation they expect to have. They know what they are going to say. They have a rough idea of what the reply should be. They have prepared mentally for a tidy script. Real conversations in a second language do not follow scripts.

The chemist example James uses in the video captures this perfectly. A student walks in and confidently asks for two packets of Paracetamol in Spanish. They are expecting a simple reply: here you are, that’s a few euros. Instead, the chemist says the delivery lorry has not arrived and they are out of stock — delivered at native speed, in natural Spanish, with none of the consideration a learner might hope for. In that moment, all the preparation collapses. The student understood their own part of the conversation and nothing else.

This is precisely the gap that the JSS Spoken Spanish lessons are designed to close. The 50 lessons in the Spoken Spanish section are built around an extensive range of real-world scenarios: exchanges in shops, at the doctors, in restaurants, dealing with neighbours, on the phone, at local government offices, and across dozens of other situations that English-speaking residents in Spain regularly encounter. In each scenario, James speaks to the student in continuous natural Spanish — not slowed down, not simplified — and the student has to listen, process, and understand.

The lessons also work in both directions. There are interactive elements where students must respond as well as listen. But the emphasis throughout is on building the ear — the ability to receive Spanish at native speed across a range of voices, accents, and registers, and to extract meaning reliably under the slight pressure of a real exchange.

A key feature of the Spoken Spanish section is its replayability. The volume of material is deliberately vast — thousands of sentences structured in multiple different ways across all fifty lessons. Students do not exhaust the content. Each time they return to a lesson, something new will register, a phrase that blurred before will snap into focus, or a structure they have been using will suddenly appear from the other side. Permanent access means students can return to these lessons as many times as they need, at any point in their learning.

The pre-recorded, on-demand format also solves a problem that classroom-based spoken practice cannot. In a classroom of thirty students, each individual gets very limited time to actually speak and even less structured time to practise listening. The JSS online format gives every student uninterrupted, focused listening practice for the full duration of every session — something no shared classroom environment can match.

James Spanish School has been helping English-speaking adults learn Spanish for over 25 years. JSS was founded by James Bretherton — who came to Spain at four, completed his entire education in Spanish, and carries both languages as a genuine native speaker.

James explains Spanish through English, unpacking the logic of the language rather than asking you to memorise rules you do not understand. Students who have made little real progress through evening classes, apps, or town hall lessons consistently find that with JSS they finally understand Spanish rather than just repeat it.

The full 100-lesson course is available on demand, 24 hours a day, from anywhere in the world, with no expiry date. To deliver success with the second element of spoken Spanish, there is WordAmigo — an AI vocabulary system with over 12,000 word pairings, native-speaker audio, and colour-coded pronunciation feedback.

The first 10 lessons are €55. The full course including WordAmigo is €399, payable in up to six monthly instalments. Cast-iron guarantee: for any lesson you honestly feel you learnt nothing from, you receive a free Spoken Spanish lesson in return.

How on earth can you do the spoken part online?

As I’ve just explained, with you only getting one opportunity out of thirty in my classroom, the other thing is that a lot of you are mistaken when you think the hardest part about speaking Spanish is going to be the speaking. This is something that everybody says when they come into my classroom: “Oh, when we get to the spoken lessons, it’s going to be so hard to speak.”

No, it’s not. Speaking Spanish is incredibly easy. I can teach anybody with half a brain to speak Spanish very, very quickly. The hard part is understanding. That is what the pre-recorded spoken online lessons are all about.

I give you loads of different scenarios where I am talking to you in Spanish constantly and you have to tune your ear to understand what is being said. Do I do them the other way around as well? Of course I do. Do I have interactive lessons where you have to answer? Of course I do. But more importantly are the scenarios.

Because what all of my students are guilty of doing — and if you have done some Spanish before, you will agree you are guilty of this — is that when you are about to go to a shop, you prepare a script in your mind of what you are going to say. You think, “Right, I am going to say this, and this is what they are going to answer, and this is what I am going to say back, and then the balloons will come down from the ceiling.” And it never works like that.

You go in and say your part, and then they come back to you with something completely different, and you are left totally lost. Even with simple things. You go to the chemist and say, “Hola, yo quiero dos paquetes de Paracetamol, por favor,” and you are expecting them to say, “Thank you very much, here you are, that’s four euros eighty.” And instead they say, “Lo siento, no tenemos Paracetamol porque el camión con los materiales no ha venido.” And you are left thinking: what did they just say?

That is why you need as much listening practice as possible. Speaking is very, very simple. Anybody who finishes my 50 core lessons can say virtually anything in Spanish. They can go into a shop and say, “Buenos días, yo estaba aquí ayer,” and carry on from there. But when they come back at you — that is when you really have to be prepared. And that is what the Spoken Spanish lessons are all about.

You can revisit these lessons again and again. You will never remember all of my sentences because there are thousands and thousands of different sentences, structured in multiple different ways to test you every way possible.

The spoken online course is the way to go because you are going to need this listening practice. Speaking is the least of your worries. Trust me — speaking is very simple. It is hearing what comes back that is the very, very hard part.
